Ayo Oluranti Biography

Ayo Olránti (previously known as Ognránti) has worked in the music scenes of Nigeria, the United Kingdom, and the United States, principally as a composer, conductor, organist, music scholar, and theorist. Ay was the Songwriter and Associate Organist at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Pittsburgh. He also commanded the Pittsburgh Festival Orchestra and successfully developed and organized sacred music events.

He is a pioneer composer-member of Alia Musica in Pittsburgh and a member of Baf rik in Brazil. Ayo was once a post-doctoral research and teaching fellow at the Tshwane University of Technology in Pretoria, South Africa, and is now a Senior Lecturer at Mountain Top University (Nigeria).

He is now working on the Postcolonial Recherche initiative as a fellow at the Goethe-Institut in Germany.

He went to Irágbiji, Osun State, Nigeria, to study and record dùndn music, a Yorùbá instrumental genre, after studying pre-colonial art Yorùbá musical traditions such as the Yorùbá folk operas with Akin Eubà in the United States.

In his works, he uses the theoretical ideas and instrumentation of dùndn music. Ay believes in the old and the modern on a larger scale.

Within such a postmodernist aesthetic, he investigates materials, techniques, and resources about the music traditions of the Global South (particularly African and African-American) to use throughout the acoustic and electroacoustic creative language.

He is now conducting field research in the suburbs of South West Nigeria, where he is exploring indigenous musical genres.

Ay received first-class distinctions (summa cum laude) in Music Composition & Organ Playing from the University of Southampton in the United Kingdom and an MA and a Ph.D. in Composition & Theory from Pittsburgh in the United States.

In the UK, he studied music with Sarah Baldock (an organ at Winchester Cathedral), William Drabkin (enhanced counterpoint & fugue), Michael Finnissy (composition), Michael Zev Gordon (composition), David Owen Norris (organ), and Peter White (conducting); in the United States, he studied music with Akin Ebà (African music), Don Franklin (Bach studies), Eric Moe (composition), Mathew Rosenblum (composition).

Olránt has received numerous awards and scholarships, including the Andrew Mellon Pre-Doctoral Fellowship (USA), St. Michael’s Organ scholarship (UK), Tafawa Balewa Scholarship (UK), Heather Award (for the best interpretation of Bach’s keyboard work – Southampton), Michael James Music Trust Award (UK), Sidney Perry Award (UK), Brereton Memorial Fund grants (UK), and others. He won the Donald Sutherland Endowment Initiative Composition Competition in 2009. (USA). At the 2018 Interkultur World Choir Games, the gold-winning Mountain Top Chorale premiered Ayo’s Ràbàtà-Rabata.

Olránt is involved in digital and virtual pipe organ exploration, design, and manufacture, with a background in Industrial & Production Engineering and Hardware Technology.
