About Smallwood’s Piano Tutor

William Smallwood probably first published this smallwoods piano instructor book in 1881. It is still available, and the book I possess was produced around one hundred years ago despite not having been published.

This copy was printed in Australia, and its sale is restricted to the two countries in question.

There is a quotation on the front page saying “Mr. Smallwood may be regarded as the friend of the young pianist.” On some pages of the edition that published the teacher are advertisements for Smallwood’s Outstanding 55 Melodious Exercises for the Pianoforte.

The index covers all sixteen subjects discussed in the book, among them: a Dictionary of Musical Terms; The Rudiments of Music; Pianoforte Keyboard; Daily Exercises; The Diatonic Scale; Duet; Introductions or Cadences in various keys, major or minor and Duet.

Smallwood begins with the terminology of line and space notes (also by necessity ledger lines) on the stave. Directly after the notes are acknowledged, Smallwood goes through the rhythmic patterns and their accompanying rests.

He assumes that people using this tutor are good at math. After that he uses the black keys to give notes their position on the piano.

The initial workouts are a bit of fun, especially when the left hand is playing in the treble clef. Its every note is articulated, the hands are synced since the very beginning.

Next the LH is in bass clef, and Smallwood introduces triple and compound time signatures very early on. You can also find triplets on page 12

After this, he explains the idea of sharps and flats and begins to talk about the keys used in music. The candidate needs to be able to play both the same scale and opposite motion scales in a number of major keys.

Then, we will have some way of squabbling with one another on diatonic and minor scales. This is followed by a succession of liturgical songs.

Some of these are a few duets before the start of cadences in different major and minor scales. He uses motifs from Haydn, Beethoven, Mozart, and even Steibelt. Preceding Smallwood’s analysis of all the major and minor scales, there is a section on the use of ornaments.

The last section of the present guitar diagram is the reference section, which has the chords used, a glossary, and frequently asked questions.

Some of the questions are about defining modulation, defining transposition, and knowing why it is called a dominant seventh, among other related questions.
