Justin Hurwitz Biography
Justin Hurwitz was born Justin Gabriel Hurwitz in the year 1985 on January 22nd. He’s a well-recognized Television writer and Film composer. Justin was best known for his works with American film director “Damien Sayre Chazelle.”
Some of his best compositions with Damien Chazelle are Whiplash[2014], Guy and Madeline on a Park[2009], La La Land [2016], and First Man[2018].
Justin was born in Los Angeles, California, to a well-recognized ballet dancer and a registered nurse “Gail Hurwitz.” And also his father “Ken Hurwitz” who works as a writer. In 1998, Justin and his family relocated to Wisconsin, where he went to public secondary “Nicolet High School.”

Growing up in California, Hurwitz was surrounded by artistic influences. His family was particularly creative; his sister was a talented violinist, and both of his parents had careers in the arts.
While his mother pursued ballet and his father wrote, Hurwitz discovered his passion for music at the young age of six when he started playing the piano. By ten years old, he was already composing original pieces.
During his eighth-grade year, he relocated with his family to Fox Point, Wisconsin. He then enrolled at Nicolet High School and also pursued musical education under pianist Stefanie Jacob at the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music in Milwaukee. Upon completing high school in 2003, he furthered his studies at Harvard University.
In addition to his growing success as a composer, he was concurrently pursuing opportunities in writing for television productions such as The Simpsons and The League.
Then, in 2014, Chazelle’s film Whiplash, which was centered around an ambitious jazz student, was released. Hurwitz’s musical composition for the film garnered him a Grammy Nomination for Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media.
Their subsequent project was the romantic musical comedy-drama La La Land, which premiered in late 2016 and quickly became their most successful venture yet.
The film received numerous accolades, including Academy Awards for Hurwitz’s exceptional score and Best Original Song for “City of Stars” (lyrics by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul).
In 2017, he worked on creating and penning episodes for Curb Your Enthusiasm, leading to an Emmy nomination in the category of Outstanding Comedy Series.
In 2018, Hurwitz created the soundtrack for Chazelle’s biographical movie First Man, depicting the life of astronaut Neil Armstrong.
Following this project, they collaborated on another film, Babylon, set during the Jazz Age. This film delved into the decline of silent film stars with the introduction of talking pictures.
