William Smallwood Biography

William Smallwood was born in 1831 at Kendal, Westmorland, and baptized in the same year. His mother, Alice, was born in 1800, and William, the father of John, in 1802.

The 1841 Census identifies William, his wife, and children living in Kendal, where William’s father is recorded as a grain merchant. Aunt Grace is two years old, and his three sisters, Jane, Alice, and Alice, all have different ages: 2.

In the 1851 Census, William Hardman is listed as an organist, and he and his family live in Kendal. Despite the music educator Jane being his sister, his father is a woolen weaver and grocery store owner.

According to one biography I read, Smallwood was an organist at the St. George’s Church in Kendal when he was fifteen years old had become a music teacher by the time he was eighteen.

William was recorded as a 59-year-old organist from Kendal in the 1861 Census. I think his father is a linsey worker or a maker of linsey-woolsey, a half-linen, half-wool garment, because the poor man is now a widower.

I want to point out that Grace works as a housekeeper, while Alice is the school’s mistress, and they live together.

William has taken over from his father as head of the family in Kendal, and in the 1871 Census, his father, Mr William Tyson, is described as out of the grocery business. William’s official designations are composer, music educator, and organist.

They actually have only one female home helper, Grace, his sister, who is responsible for washing and other related house chores.

In 1881 William is listed as living in Kendal, unrelated occupation, still living with his father Thomas Still a tea trader and grocer, his sister Grace a housekeeper, his nephew John Winder a music student a scholar and a female house worker.

William, his housekeeper sister Grace, his music teacher nephew John Winder, and a female house servant were all enumerated in Kendal in the most recent census taken the year before William died in 1891.

William also works as an organist and music teacher at St. George’s Church. The young man’s dad died in 1884. John, his mother, Jane Winder, and his aunt Grace Smallwood are all recorded in the Kendal home in the 1901 Census, which means that John most likely inherited it.

Grace Smallwood is John’s aunt, and John Smallwood Winder also resides in the house in the 1911 census.

Probate was granted to the nephew’s John Smallwood Winder, musician, and John William Smallwood Metcalfe, professor of singing, on the twenty-fourth of September one thousand, nine hundred ninety-seven after the death of William Smallwood at Kendal on the sixth of August one thousand, nine hundred and ninety-seven.

It cost £5885,16s and 2d, which was spent on the effects. His burial was at Kendal at Parkside Cemetery in Westmorland. In 1913, he lost his sister Grace Mary to pneumonia.

Smallwood was an early innovator in completely fingering his works for piano students.

This collection contains a variety of artifacts from the 19th and early 20th centuries related to William Smallwood and Smallwood Metcalfe. Among these artifacts are three albumen print cartes-de-visite of William Smallwood, an album of concert programs and handbills from the concerts he attended, bills and receipts from solicitors, a few manuscript scores, a photo of Henry J. Wood with his signature and inscription to Smallwood Metcalfe, an album of newspaper cuttings about Metcalfe’s Choir, and approximately 100 other items.

The collection of William Smallwood sheet music includes five bound volumes and original printed wrappers. Famous composer William Smallwood was active in the latter half of the nineteenth century. His widely reprinted book, “Smallwood’s Pianoforte Tutor,” brought him a modest fortune; he was born and raised in Kendal.

Mozart, Haydn, and many other composers’ works were transcribed and arranged by him on piano or organ. A direct descendant donated this collection; his signature may be seen on several artifacts—one container.
